Artist Infomation

김지희는 전통 재료를 기반으로 현대적 이미지를 구축하는 작업으로 주목받아 왔다. 장지 위에 동양화 채색 물감을 사용하면서도 팝아트적 감각과 강렬한 색채, 대중적인 아이콘을 결합해 동시대적 시각 언어를 만들어낸다. 교정기, 오드아이, 선글라스와 같은 파격적인 소재를 인물에 결합하며 현대인의 정체성과 감정, 사회적 욕망을 시각적으로 드러내는 것이 특징이다. 2007년 일본 전일전 예술상, 2011년 제11회 청작미술상을 최연소로 수상하며 일찍이 작품성을 인정받았다.

2008년부터 이어지고 있는 대표 연작 <Sealed Smile>은 김지희를 상징하는 시리즈로 선글라스를 착용한 여성 인물을 통해 감정이 차단된 현대인의 내면을 은유한다. ‘눈은 마음의 창’이라는 명제에서 출발한 이 도상은 자신을 드러내기보다 감추고 꾸미며 사회가 요구하는 모습에 순응하는 현대인의 초상을 보여준다. 화려하고 빛나는 이미지 이면에는 고독, 불안, 욕망이 공존하며, 이는 전통 재료가 지닌 부드럽고 따뜻한 질감과 대비를 이루며 작품에 역설적인 긴장감을 부여한다.

김지희의 작업은 욕망과 희망을 이분법적으로 구분하기보다, 더 나은 삶을 향한 강한 바람이라는 공통된 지점에서 바라본다. 최근 작품에서는 이전보다 한층 밝고 부드러워진 색감과 다양한 오브제를 통해 관객과의 접점을 확장하며, ‘강력한 욕망’에서 ‘밝은 희망’으로 시선을 이동시킨다. 서울을 비롯해 뉴욕, LA, 런던, 홍콩, 도쿄, 베이징 등에서 200여 회 이상의 전시에 참여했으며, 국내외 주요 컬렉션에 작품이 소장되어 있다. 이미지로 소통하는 동시대의 감각을 포착하며, 김지희의 작품은 오늘날을 살아가는 우리의 감정과 욕망을 반짝이는 표면 아래 담아낸다.
