Artist Infomation

우제길은 일본 교토에서 태어나 광양에서 유년기를 보낸 한국 추상화 2세대 작가로 기하학적 추상을 통해 ‘빛’을 시각화하는 독창적인 작업 세계를 구축해왔다. 그는 자연에서 영감을 받은 빛의 리듬과 층위를 화면에 구현하며, 이를 통해 깊이 있는 조형성과 미묘한 감각적 경험을 전달한다. 광주·전남 지역 추상미술 단체 에포크(Époque)의 핵심 회원으로서, 지역 기반의 비구상 미술 활동을 선도하였다.

작업 초기인 1970년대에는 손과 손바닥만으로 그라데이션을 표현하며 검정, 흰색, 회색 중심의 절제된 색채를 사용하였다. 1980년대에는 도구 사용과 함께 군청색이 섞인 검정 톤의 추상화가 주를 이루었고, 1990년대에는 녹색, 적색, 갈색 등 다양한 색채가 도입되며 색조의 변화를 시도하였다. 2010년대 이후에는 원색과 한지를 활용한 실험적 작업으로 빛의 단층과 겹침, 지그재그 형태 변주 등을 통해 화면 속 깊이와 리듬감을 강조하였다.

우제길의 작품은 빛과 어둠, 희망과 절망이라는 상징적 대비를 탐구하며, “과거의 빛은 절망의 빛, 현재의 빛은 희망의 빛”이라는 작가의 말처럼 삶의 양면성을 화면 속에 담아낸다. 대표 연작으로는 1970년대부터 지속된 <리듬>, <작품> 시리즈와 2000년대 이후의 <빛(Light)> 연작이 있으며, 이를 통해 작가가 일관되게 추구해 온 빛의 세계를 감상할 수 있다.

주요 전시로는 1987년 국립현대미술관 ‘이달의 작가전’, 1995년 광주시립미술관 ‘우제길 회화 40년전’, 1999년 금호미술관, 2013년 예술의전당, 2019년 아시아문화전당 전시 등이 있으며, 광주에는 우제길미술관이 위치한다. 한국 현대미술의 중요한 지평을 연 우제길은 평생 빛의 수평적·수직적 변화와 기하학적 추상 회화에 몰두하며 독창적인 작업 세계를 이어가고 있다.

Parcel delivery is only available for select items at a fee of KRW 5,000 (KRW 10,000 for remote regions or Jeju Island.) Parcel delivery may not be available depending on the weight and value of item(s).
Luxury goods and musical instruments must be collected in person.
