데미안 허스트가 속해 있던 ‘YBA’ Young British Artist 그룹은 1980년대 영국 현대 미술계의 도전장을 내밀며 등장했다. 이들은 대다수가 골드스미스 대학 출신이었고, 젊은 작가들이 모여 새로운 예술을 시도하는데 데미안 허스트 이외에 우리에게 잘 알려진 트레이시 에민(Tracey Emin), 제니 샤빌(Jenny Savile), 마크 퀸(Marc Quinn)등이 있다.
1988년 졸업을 앞둔 데미안 허스트는 동료들과 함께 창고를 빌려 기획한 ‘프리즈 Freeze’라는 전시를 통해 세상에 처음 알려지게 되었고, 당시 영국의 주요 컬렉터이자 딜러였던 찰스 사치의 눈에 띄며 YBA가 주목받게 되었다. 찰스 사치는 허스트가 원하는 작품을 제작할 수 있도록 아낌없이 지원했으며, 이후 그는 찰스 사치의 갤러리에서 ‘Young British Artist’라는 전시를 통해 이름을 알리게 되는데, 1991년 제작한 거대한 상어 작품은 ‘살아있는 자의 마음속에 있는 죽음의 물리적 불가능성 <The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living’이라는 제목으로 거대한 크기의 죽은 상어의 시체를 포름알데히드가 가득 담긴 유리 진열장에 넣은 채 전시했는데 제작 당시 엄청난 논란을 일으켰다. 작가는 작품을 통해 죽음에 대한 막연함과 두려움에 대한 자신만의 철학적 사유와 인간의 고뇌를 대변하였다. 작품 제작 당시, 실제 동물을 사용함으로써 다수의 동물 단체에서 큰 비판을 받았지만 오히려 작가는 이슈를 가시화하며 더욱 다양하고 실험적인 작품을 제작했다.
1993년, 베니스 비엔날레에 ‘어머니와 아이<Mother and Child Divided>’라는 제목으로 소와 송아지를 절반으로 절단하여 유리 수조 안에 넣은 작품을 전시했는데 또 한 번 이슈가 되었고, 이후 1995년 영국에서 가장 권위 있는 미술상인 Turner Prize를 수상하게 된다. 전 세계적인 이목을 집중시키며 영국 현대미술의 센세이션을 일으키게 된 작가는 소, 말, 상어와 같은 동물 박제 시리즈 이후에 실제 나비를 작품에 사용하기도 했는데 대형 캔버스에 7-9000마리의 실제 나비를 박제하며 또 한 번 논란의 휩싸인다. 생물의 본질적인 물음에서 시작한 탄생과 죽음의 굴레 안에서 인간의 고뇌와 욕망, 그리고 경험할 수 없는 세계에 대한 호기심을 표현하려 실제 나비가 가지고 있는 천연의 빛깔과 오색찬란한 색감을 그대로 활용하여 무지개 빛깔에 비유한 것이 큰 특징이다.
또한 90년대부터 꾸준하게 작업해 온 ‘약국<Pharmacy>’는 그의 대표적인 시리즈로 현대 사회에서 다양한 질병으로부터 고통받은 현대인들을 치료해 주는 의약품에서 착안했다. 그는 의약품과 예술에서 ‘치유’라는 공통적인 의미를 발견하고, 현대인들이 의지하게 되는 약이라는 존재에 대한 맹목적인 모습에 대해 비판, 심리적 치유를 선사하는 예술에 의미에 대해서 고찰한다.
이후, 데미안 허스트는 2007년 우리에게 가장 잘 알려진 ‘신의 사랑을 위하여 <For The Love of God>’라는 제목의 해골 작품을 발표한다. 8601개의 다이아몬드로 장식된 해골 작품은 치아 부분을 제외하고는 실제가 아니며 18세기 해골을 모델링 한 작품이다. 당시 제작비만 250억 가치로 측정된 이 작품은 유명 컬렉터에게 판매되었는지 작가와 그의 전속 갤러리에게 판매되었는지는 정확하게 알려지지 않았다.
최근에도 새로운 형태의 나비 페인팅, 벚꽃 페인팅 등을 선보이고 매번 작품을 발표할 때마다 관객들에게 신선한 자극을 선사하는 데미안 허스트의 작품은 끊임없는 실험과 도전의 연속이다. 그의 작품을 한 마디로 표현할 수는 없지만 ‘삶과 죽음’이라는 큰 주제 안에서 그는 인간이 가질 수 없는 영원성과 삶의 아름다움, 인간이 가지고 있는 죽음이라는 불가피한 숙명에 대해 이야기하고 있다.

Additional fees may apply for unique delivery circumstances such as no-elevator (walk-up) buildings, ladder truck requirements, etc.
Parcel delivery is only available for select items at a fee of KRW 5,000 (KRW 10,000 for remote regions or Jeju Island.) Parcel delivery may not be available depending on the weight and value of item(s).
Luxury goods and musical instruments must be collected in person.

Storage
A storage fee of KRW 30,000 per day will be charged for each lot that has not been collected 7 calendar days after purchase, regardless of whether the purchase price has been rendered in full.
For successful bids, a buyer’s premium (excluding VAT) and buyer’s expenses (if applicable) will be charged in addition to the hammer price.
All lots are sold “as is” and the bidder shall be responsible for viewing the lot in person beforehand. All bids are irrevocable and may not be retracted based on the condition of the artwork or frame.
Please bid carefully as a Buyer Withdrawal Fee of 30% of the hammer price must be paid in order to cancel a winning bid.
If a bid is placed within the last 30 seconds, the closing time for that lot will be extended by an additional 30 seconds.
Bidders bidding on the Lots considered to be traditional Koreas relices and treasures must fully understand the terms of Korea Culture Heritage Properties Protection Law, which prohibits exportation of such Lot.
