장 미셸 오토니엘은 1980년대부터 드로잉, 조각, 글쓰기, 퍼포먼스 등 다양한 방법들을 통하여 형태에 관한 연구를 해오고 있다. 그의 시그니처 작품인 유리 조형물 설치 작업으로 우리에게 잘 알려진 오토니엘은 지난 30여 년간 일반적인 미술 사조와는 약간의 거리를 둔 채, 작가의 개인적인 철학과 삶이 반영된 독자적인 조형 세계를 구축해 왔다.
1980년대 파리를 비롯한 유럽의 예술계에서는 70년대부터 주류를 생성해 온 미니멀리즘이 대세로 자리 잡고 있었으나, 오토니엘은 이러한 사조에서 벗어나 지극히 개인적인 형식을 고수했고 본인만의 아름다움을 찾았다. 늘 아름다움에 대해 고심하던 그는 동료 예술가였던 ‘펠릭스 곤잘레스 토레스 Felix Gonzalez-Torres 1957-1996)로 부터 예술적 영감을 많이 받았고, 일반적인 형태의 작품만을 고집함에서 벗어나 음악, 문학, 시 등 여러 가지 예술의 형태로부터 자유로워질 수 있었다고 한다.
물질에 대한 자유와 변형에 대해 고민하던 작가는 90년대 무라노에서 유리 공예가를 만나게 된 이후, 터닝 포인트를 맞이하게 되고 1997년 ‘펠릭스 곤잘레스 토레스 (Felix Gonzalez-Torres 1957-1996) 추모 1주기를 맞이하여 제작한 유리 구슬 목걸이 작업을 시작으로 오랫동안 유리 재료에 매료되어 탐구해 오고 있다.
재료의 물성에 대해 연구하기 시작한 작가는 작업 초반에 주로 사용하던 유황과 지푸라기를 넘어 유리, 최근 알루미늄까지 다양한 재료를 사용하는데 재료 선정에 있어 가장 큰 기준은 누구나 알고 있는 일상적인 재료이고, 작품을 전시하게 되는 공간과 조화로움이다. 외부, 내부 공간에 따라 물질의 특성을 가장 두드러지게 표현할 수 있는 화면을 찾고, 이는 일상의 현실에서 창출되는 미의 표현으로 이어진다.
작가의 작품은 단순 미학에 지나지 않고, 수학적 과학적 영역 어딘가에 자리하고 있다. 아름다움을 추구하는 것 이외에, 기하학적 구조와 균형 사이에서 일어나는 변형을 탐구한다. 작품을 통해 관객들과 은밀하게 대화하고 이러한 상호작용을 통해 인간과 예술, 인간과 인간, 예술과 예술의 관계에 대해 생각한다. 1992년 카셀 도큐멘타에 참가를 시작으로 세계 전시를 하기 시작했고, 파리 퐁피두 센터에서의 회고전, 리움 미술관, 뉴욕 브루클린 박물관에서의 대규모 전시를 하며 큰 기록을 남기고 있다.

Objects purchased in online auctions must be collected in person. Shipping may be requested if in-person collection is not possible. Shipping fees will be charged as below.

Additional fees may apply for unique delivery circumstances such as no-elevator (walk-up) buildings, ladder truck requirements, etc.
Parcel delivery is only available for select items at a fee of KRW 5,000 (KRW 10,000 for remote regions or Jeju Island.) Parcel delivery may not be available depending on the weight and value of item(s).
Luxury goods and musical instruments must be collected in person.
For in-person pickups, please contact your specialist by 5 pm of the day before to reserve pickup. (For weekends and holidays, pickup must be reserved by Friday or the last prior business day.)

Storage
A storage fee of KRW 30,000 per day will be charged for each lot that has not been collected 7 calendar days after purchase, regardless of whether the purchase price has been rendered in full.
For successful bids, a buyer’s premium (excluding VAT) and buyer’s expenses (if applicable) will be charged in addition to the hammer price.
All lots are sold “as is” and the bidder shall be responsible for viewing the lot in person beforehand. All bids are irrevocable and may not be retracted based on the condition of the artwork or frame.
Please bid carefully as a Buyer Withdrawal Fee of 30% of the hammer price must be paid in order to cancel a winning bid.
If a bid is placed within the last 30 seconds, the closing time for that lot will be extended by an additional 30 seconds.
Bidders bidding on the Lots considered to be traditional Koreas relices and treasures must fully understand the terms of Korea Culture Heritage Properties Protection Law, which prohibits exportation of such Lot.
