오늘날 영국을 대표하는 작가이다. 줄리안 오피의 작품은 일상에 존재하는 인물들의 모습을 픽토그램 형식으로 단순화된 형태와 뚜렷한 윤곽선으로 표현하는 것이 가장 큰 특징이다. 작가는 골드스미스(Gold Smith)에 재학하는 동안, 우리에게도 친숙한 마이클 크레이그 마틴 (b. 1941 Irish)에게 가르침을 받았다. 영국의 1세대 개념 미술가인 크레이그 마틴의 영향으로 오피는 사물을 단순화하고 물체를 아이코닉 한 모습으로 표현하여 새로운 팝 이미지를 창조하는 작업을 선보였고, 영국의 젊은 예술가들 (YBA) 메인 멤버로 활동하며 이름을 알리기 시작했다.
1980년대 초기 작업에서는 사물을 단순화하는 작업을 시작으로 작품 활동을 시작했는데 우리 일상에서 흔하게 볼 수 있는 소재들을 이용하여 회화와 조각의 경계에서 새로운 형태의 작품을 선보인다. 캔버스 위에 유화 물감을 표현하는 고전적 방식의 회화에서 벗어나, 단단한 철 위에 페인팅을 칠하여 평면적 회화에서 입체감이 더해진 작품을 선보이며 조각과 회화의 방식에서 다양한 연구를 시도해 왔다. 작가는 80년대 후반부터 재료에 관한 연구에 집중하기 시작하는데 철, 우드, 종이 등 재료가 가지고 있는 물성을 극대화하기 위해 표현을 최소한으로 하기 시작했고, 이는 미니멀리즘의 형태로 이어져 현재의 단순화된 라인워크의 작가 시그니처 스타일의 시초가 된다.
줄리안 오피에게 또 하나의 가장 중요한 요소는 빛이다. 작가에게 빛은 시각을 더욱 흥미롭게 하고, 그림자를 만들고, 단순화된 형태의 깊이와 컬러를 더한다고 말한다. 우리는 생존의 수단으로 기능적인 형식으로만 시각을 당연시하고 있지만, 이보다 더 깊은 의미를 가지고 있고 우리에게 빛이 사라지는 순간 모든 것은 일차원적 단순한 존재가 된다고 작가는 말한다. 이에 따라, 재료의 물성과 빛과 색채를 연구한 줄리안 오피는 페인팅, 조각, 필름 등 형식에 제한되지 않는 작품으로 특히 퍼블릭 스페이스(공공미술)에 대형 작품을 설치하여 관객들과 교감하며 우리에게 친근하게 다가오기 시작했다.
줄리안 오피의 가장 주된 소재는 인물이다. 17-18세기 명화 초상화를 현대적인 감성으로 재해석하기도 하고, 직접 택한 모델들을 대상으로 작업하기도 한다. 인물화를 하는 것이 가장 평범한 예술인 동시에 가장 실용적인 예술 형식이라고 생각한다는 작가는 다양한 형태의 인물화를 선보이는데, 특히 걷고 있는 인물이 주요 소재로 사용된다. 인간의 가장 자연스러운 행위로서 걷는 모습은 개인이 보여줄 수 있는 가장 부담 없는 포즈인 동시에, 각자의 패턴이 무의식적으로 반영되는 다양한 색깔의 퍼스낼리티이기도 하다. 이처럼, 줄리안 오피는 유화, 조각과 같은 전통적인 매체의 경계를 넓히기 위해 전자 매체를 사용해 조각에 움직임을 더하였고, 여러 가지 시각적 자극에 노출된 현대인들의 특징을 이해하고 움직이는 회화를 선보인다. 이는, 작가가 말하는 조형 언어가 매체의 활용을 통해 효과적으로 표출되는 방법이다.
"나의 작업은 사진과 비디오 영상에서 얻은 이미지로 시작해서 컴퓨터를 이용해 단순화시킨 다음 회화, 조각, 애니메이션 등 다양한 매체로 출력한다. 꼭 필요한 부분만 남기고 모듈화함으로써 형태나 색채의 변형을 통해 무한대로 복제 생산할 수 있다는 점에서 산업 시대의 상품 생산방식과 맥을 같이한다. 이러한 점이 나의 작품을 가장 현대적이고, 동시대적인 작품으로 제시하고 있다. 단 몇 개의 선과 모양만으로 완성된 인물 형상은 현대인의 익명성을 나타냄과 동시에 경쾌하고 친숙한 또 하나의 팝 아이콘이 된다." -줄리안 오피-

Storage
A storage fee of KRW 30,000 per day will be charged for each lot that has not been collected 7 calendar days after purchase, regardless of whether the purchase price has been rendered in full.
For successful bids, a buyer’s premium (excluding VAT) and buyer’s expenses (if applicable) will be charged in addition to the hammer price.
All lots are sold “as is” and the bidder shall be responsible for viewing the lot in person beforehand. All bids are irrevocable and may not be retracted based on the condition of the artwork or frame.
Please bid carefully as a Buyer Withdrawal Fee of 30% of the hammer price must be paid in order to cancel a winning bid.
If a bid is placed within the last 30 seconds, the closing time for that lot will be extended by an additional 30 seconds.
Bidders bidding on the Lots considered to be traditional Koreas relices and treasures must fully understand the terms of Korea Culture Heritage Properties Protection Law, which prohibits exportation of such Lot.
