박서보는 한국 현대 추상 회화의 발전에 있어 선구적인 역할을 한 작가이다. 1950년대에는 앵포르멜 작가로, 1970년대부터는 단색화의 대표적인 작가로 손꼽히며 자신의 독보적인 화업을 이어갔다. 그는 홍익대학교 미술대학교수와 미술대학 학장을 지냈으며 사단법인 한국미술협회 이사장을 역임하면서 교육자이자 행정가로서 한국 현대 미술의 흐름에 족적을 남겼다.
한국 전쟁의 참상을 경험한 그는 당시 목가적인 아카데미 화풍에 반기를 들고 1956년 김충선, 문우식, 김영환과 함께 반국전(反國展) 선언을 발표하면서 당대 작가들에게 도전과 창조 정신을 촉구했다. 이를 계기로 1957년 발표한 <회화 No.1>은 국내 최초의 앵포르멜 작품으로 손꼽힌다. 이후 1960년대 제작된 <원형질> 연작은 한층 정제된 사유의 장이라 할 수 있다. 60년대 박서보는 전쟁 후 10여 년이 지나면서 이 체험들이 내면화되는 과정을 거쳤다고 회고한 바 있다.
박서보는 일찍이 서구의 현대 미술의 흐름을 받아들이면서 동시에 한국의 전통적인 미감을 현대적으로 구현하기도 했다. 1961년 파리 체류 기간 동안 짧은 기간에도 불구하고 비교적 다양한 서구 미술을 소화하면서 자신의 그림에 이를 녹여 내었다. 60년대와 70년대를 잇는 <유전질> 작품에서 그는 서구의 옵 아트와 팝 아트를 수용하면서도, 오방색이라는 한국 고유의 색감을 사용하기도 했다(참고도판 1).
1970년대 이후 그는 캔버스에 유백색 물감을 칠하고 연필로 긋기를 반복하는 작업을 시작했다(참고도판 2). 박서보의 대표적인 ‘묘법(Écriture)’ 작업이 시작된 것이다. 이 연작에서 이러한 반복적인 작업은 무목적의 행위를 상징하며, 이 과정에서 리듬을 타며 자신을 비워내고 물성과 정신성, 작가의 행위가 합일에 이르게 된다. <묘법>을 통해 박서보는 자신의 작업이 수신의 도구가 되었다고 말한다.

이러한 작업 방식은 이후 묘법 연작들을 관통하는 그의 제작 방식이다. 그러나 동일하거나 유사한 제작 방식일지라도 재료의 변화와 시간의 흐름에 따라 변화하는 작가의 철학이 작품 안에 담겨있다.
1982년 이후 작업에서 그는 닥종이를 재발견하게 되면서 여기에 수성 물감과 연필을 사용한다(참고도판 3). 1980년대 중기 묘법에서 그는 한지의 물성을 극대화하기 위해 한지가 채 마르기 전에 문지르거나 긁고 밀어붙이는 등의 행위를 강조한다. 이러한 반복되는 행위는 손의 움직임에 따라 자유로운 방향성이 두드러져 지그재그 묘법이라 불리기도 한다.
1990년대 중반 이후 그는 손가락으로 직접 긁고 문지르는 대신 막대기나 자와 같은 도구를 이용하여 일정한 간격을 유지하면서 밀어냄으로써 화면에 길고 도드라진 선과 고랑처럼 파인 면들을 만들어냈다(참고도판 4). 그리고 2000년대 초반 단풍 절정기의 풍경을 경험한 그가 자연 속에서 강렬한 치유의 경험을 하면서 회화에 대한 그의 신념은 더욱 확고해졌다. 자연이 그러하듯 예술이 흡인지처럼 현대인의 번민과 고통을 치유하는 도구가 되어야 한다는 그의 생각은 점차 중첩된 색면의 오묘함을 내포하며 더욱 다채로워진다(참고도판 5).

그는 ‘회화는 무엇을 할 수 있는가’라는 회화의 역할과 작용에 대한 질문을 이어갔다. 박서보가 ‘묘법(Écriture)’에 머물러 있고자 한 것은 회화에 대한 그의 신념 때문이다. 그는 회화에서 흔히 사용되는 기초적인 매체를 가지고 ‘그리기’의 단순한 행위를 반복하여 단일한 흔적을 남긴다. 대부분의 회화 작업이 작품의 결과에 목적을 두는 반면, 박서보는 제작 과정과 진행 중인 행위의 시간에 주목한다. 행위를 반복하는 과정 속에서 실로 풍부하고 복합적인 작품 세계를 창출하는 그의 작업은 전통적인 회화의 개념에 있어 획기적인 전환이라 할 수 있다.

Luxury goods and musical instruments must be collected in person.

Storage
A storage fee of KRW 30,000 per day will be charged for each lot that has not been collected 7 calendar days after purchase, regardless of whether the purchase price has been rendered in full.
For successful bids, a buyer’s premium (excluding VAT) and buyer’s expenses (if applicable) will be charged in addition to the hammer price.
All lots are sold “as is” and the bidder shall be responsible for viewing the lot in person beforehand. All bids are irrevocable and may not be retracted based on the condition of the artwork or frame.
Please bid carefully as a Buyer Withdrawal Fee of 30% of the hammer price must be paid in order to cancel a winning bid.
If a bid is placed within the last 30 seconds, the closing time for that lot will be extended by an additional 30 seconds.
Bidders bidding on the Lots considered to be traditional Koreas relices and treasures must fully understand the terms of Korea Culture Heritage Properties Protection Law, which prohibits exportation of such Lot.
