그림이 묘사하는 대상이 거의 제거되고 색상이 극도로 제한된 이우환의 회화는 서양의 미니멀리즘과 종종 연관되어 왔다. 이러한 외관상의 유사함에도 불구하고, 그의 작업은 초기부터 시작된 다양한 철학적 고민을 함축하며 동양의 정신을 구현하고 있다.
유교적 가풍의 집안에서 태어나 시(詩), 서(書), 화(畵)를 배운 이우환은 서울대학교 미술대학에 입학하여 동양화를 공부했다. 1956년 일본 니혼 대학 문학부에서 철학을 전공하면서 그는 전통적인 이성주의, 인간중심주의의 토대를 해체하고자 하는 하이데거와 교토 학파의 철학 사상에 많은 영향을 받게 된다. 이 시기 이우환은 ‘제시’가 ‘창조’보다 진리에 더욱 가깝다고 주장하면서, 인간의 손으로 무언가를 가공하기보다 실제 사물과 자연의 만남을 있는 그대로 ‘제시’함으로써 서로 다른 사물 사이의 관계를 강조하는 작업에 몰두했다. 그의 예술 세계는 서구의 미니멀리즘이나 개념미술과는 달리 동양 정신을 구현한 것으로 동양 최초의 자생적 현대 미술 운동인 모노하(物派) 운동의 이론적 기반이 되기도 하였다.
1970년대가 되면서 그는 다시 회화 작업으로 돌아오는데 그의 작품은 시기와 주제에 따라 크게 ‘점’, ‘선’, ‘바람’, ‘조응’ 연작으로 분류된다. 하지만 이러한 외관상의 다양한 변화에도 불구하고 작가는 자신의 작품을 ‘여백의 예술’이라 칭한다. 그는 빈 캔버스에 붓질을 하는 행위를 통해 마음을 비우며, 그 과정에 내재된 본질적인 의미를 발견하고, 그 과정을 통해 궁극적으로는 ‘나’와 ‘타자(외부)’ 간의 관계성을 드러내려고 시도하였다.
비교적 초기에 몰두한 <점으로부터>와 <선으로부터>는 동양화의 기본 획을 연상시킨다. 일정하게 점과 선을 반복적으로 화면에 담아내면서, 이우환은 이들이 하나의 고정된 개념으로 수렴하지 않고 시간의 흐름에 따라 점점 옅어지는 과정을 보여주고 있다.
<점으로부터>와 <선으로부터>를 발전시켜 나가면서 이우환은 회화에서의 반복 형태와 연속 구조에 관해 탐구한다. 처음에 묻힌 물감이 모두 소진되어 붓 자국의 나열이 중단되면, 다시 물감을 묻혀 새로운 행을 시작한다. 반복된 행위와 시간성은 하나의 점이 다른 점으로 이어지면서 선으로 확장된다.
이러한 연작들이 수평이나 수직 방향의 동작이 균일하게 연속됨으로써 규칙적이고 질서정연한 화면을 보여주었다면, 이후의 바람 연작은 더 자유롭고 역동적으로 구성되었다. 초기 그림들과 달리 바람 시리즈의 구성은 직접적으로 파악할 수 있는 규칙이나 재현할 수 있는 순서를 따르지 않을 뿐 아니라 분명한 방향을 인식하거나 예상할 수도 없다. 붓질도 초기 연작과 달리 일정한 체계 없이 물감의 농도를 달리해 칠했으며, 꺾이고, 굽어지고, 겹치거나 중첩되기도 한다. 이런 방식으로 인해 막연한 공간감이 드러나지만, 그것이 상세하게 규정되거나 확정되지는 않는다.
1990년대부터 이우환은 <조응> 연작을 통해 가공하지 않은 밑바탕에 몇 개의 집약적인 회화적 설정을 얹는 방식으로 점차 옮겨갔다. 이전의 선이나 점 연작과는 달리 작가는 <조응>에서 넓은 붓을 선택하여 캔버스에 최소한의 붓 자국만을 남긴다. 또한 칠해진 부분은 하얀 바탕의 캔버스와 밀접한 관계를 맺는 동시에 하얀 벽, 즉 바깥쪽 공간과도 융합하며 개방되어 있는 듯한 인상을 제공하고, 하얀 캔버스의 넓은 평면과 극단적인 대조를 이루며 공간적인 대치성을 선명하게 드러내고 있다.
2000년대 중반 이후 더욱 간결한 모습의 <Dialogue>가 등장하면서 캔버스와 관람자, 그리고 공간의 대화는 더욱 밀접한 관계를 맺기 시작했다. 이우환은 그림에서 가장 기초적인 단위인 점과 선의 개념, 이들의 자율성, 더 나아가 무한한 시공간을 화폭에 담아냈다. 그의 작품은 사물, 관람자, 공간 사이의 만남 그리고 자연과 인위적인 사물 사이의 경계를 넘나든다. 이를 통해 차이를 존중하고 타자와의 대화를 강조하는 이우환의 작품 세계는 동양 철학을 바탕으로 서양의 모더니즘적 사고에 대한 대안을 제시하고 있다.

Storage
A storage fee of KRW 30,000 per day will be charged for each lot that has not been collected 7 calendar days after purchase, regardless of whether the purchase price has been rendered in full.
For successful bids, a buyer’s premium (excluding VAT) and buyer’s expenses (if applicable) will be charged in addition to the hammer price.
All lots are sold “as is” and the bidder shall be responsible for viewing the lot in person beforehand. All bids are irrevocable and may not be retracted based on the condition of the artwork or frame.
Please bid carefully as a Buyer Withdrawal Fee of 30% of the hammer price must be paid in order to cancel a winning bid.
If a bid is placed within the last 30 seconds, the closing time for that lot will be extended by an additional 30 seconds.
Bidders bidding on the Lots considered to be traditional Koreas relices and treasures must fully understand the terms of Korea Culture Heritage Properties Protection Law, which prohibits exportation of such Lot.
