1929년 일본 나가노의 부유한 집안에서 막내로 태어난 쿠사마 야요이는 부모의 지지를 받지 못한 채 어린 시절부터 어머니의 육체적 학대와 질책을 경험하며 평탄하지 않은 유년기를 보냈다. 아버지의 잦은 외도와 어머니의 학대는 그녀에게 깊은 정신적 상처를 남겼으며, 이후 쿠사마는 오랜 시간 정신질환과 강박 증상, 망상과 환각 등을 경험하게 된다.
어느 날 우연히 집 안에 있던 빨간 꽃무늬 식탁보를 바라본 후, 눈에 남은 잔상이 온 집안을 뒤덮는 듯한 경험을 하게 되었고, 이후 이러한 형상은 동그란 물방울무늬로 변형되어 끊임없이 그녀를 따라다녔다. 이는 훗날 쿠사마가 평생에 걸쳐 탐구하게 되는 가장 중요한 소재인 ‘Polka Dot(물방울무늬)’의 출발점이 되었다.
학창 시절부터 미술에 소질을 보였던 쿠사마 야요이는 교토의 미술 공예 학교에 입학했지만 정형화된 교육과정에 큰 흥미를 느끼지 못하고 자신만의 자유로운 추상회화를 시도하기 시작했다. 20대에는 몽환적인 표현법으로 자연과 여성의 아름다움을 표현한 미국의 화가 조지아 오키프(Georgia O’Keeffe, 1887–1986)의 작품에 큰 매력을 느꼈으며, 보수적인 일본 미술계를 벗어나 새로운 예술적 가능성을 모색하기 위해 미국으로 향했다.
일본에서 첫 개인전을 개최한 이후 1957년 미국으로 건너간 쿠사마는 본격적으로 아티스트의 길을 걸으며 다양한 실험을 전개했다. 당시 뉴욕에서는 추상표현주의를 중심으로 한 미술계가 형성되어 있었으며, 주요 작가 대부분이 남성이었던 만큼 비서양인 여성 작가였던 쿠사마가 주류 미술계에서 인정받기는 쉽지 않았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그녀는 자신이 경험한 환각과 강박적 사고에서 비롯된 독창적인 조형 언어를 발전시켰으며, 1959년부터 대표작인 <Infinity Nets> 연작을 지속적으로 제작했다.
극도로 미세한 움직임을 규칙적으로 반복해야 하는 강박적 행위를 통해 쿠사마는 끝없이 증식하는 듯한 ‘그물’ 패턴으로 캔버스를 채워 나갔다. 놀라운 집중력과 지속성을 바탕으로 반복적인 행위를 작품으로 전환한 <Infinity Nets> 연작은 당시 미국 미술계의 추상표현주의 및 미니멀리즘과 비교되기도 했다. 반복적인 행위가 만들어 낸 화면은 단순하고 절제된 구성에도 불구하고 그 형태가 무한히 증식하는 듯한 인상을 만들어내며 독특한 시각적 경험을 선사한다.
1961년 도널드 주드(Donald Judd, 1928–1994), 에바 헤세(Eva Hesse, 1936–1970) 등이 활동하던 건물로 작업실을 이전한 쿠사마는 동시대 작가들과 교류하며 새로운 매체와 형식을 적극적으로 수용하기 시작했다. 이후 평면회화를 넘어 의자와 테이블 등 일상의 사물에 흰색 패브릭을 덮어 돌기 형태를 부착하는 소프트 스컬프처(Soft Sculpture)를 비롯해 다양한 조각과 설치 작업을 선보였다. 또한 거울과 빛을 활용한 <Infinity Mirror Room> 연작을 제작하여 공간의 굴절과 착시를 통해 무한히 반복되는 환영의 공간을 구현했다.
1970년대 초반 오랜 연인이었던 조셉 코넬(Joseph Cornell, 1903–1972)과 아버지의 연이은 죽음으로 큰 충격을 받은 쿠사마는 정신적 어려움이 더욱 심화되었다. 불안정한 시기가 이어지면서 작품 활동에도 영향을 받았으나, 결국 일본으로 돌아온 이후 병원에 머물며 지속적으로 작품을 제작했다. 이 시기를 전후하여 <Infinity> 연작과 함께 오늘날 쿠사마를 대표하는 이미지 중 하나인 <Pumpkin> 연작도 본격적으로 전개하기 시작했다.
호박은 쿠사마의 어린 시절 기억에서 비롯된 소재이기도 하다. 도매업에 종사했던 집안의 창고에는 늘 호박이 쌓여 있었고, 어린 쿠사마는 이를 가까이에서 바라보며 둥글면서도 납작하고 불규칙하게 찌그러진 호박의 형태에서 독특한 아름다움을 발견했다. 소박하고 친숙한 호박의 모습에 매력을 느낀 그녀는 이를 다양한 색채와 패턴의 회화 및 조각으로 발전시켰으며, 호박은 이후 그녀의 작업에서 중요한 상징이자 치유의 이미지로 반복적으로 등장했다.
작품 활동 초기부터 도트 무늬를 활용해 온 쿠사마는 콜라주, 에칭, 회화, 조각, 설치, 퍼포먼스 등 다양한 매체를 넘나들며 자신만의 독창적인 조형 세계를 구축했다. 기존의 회화적 관습에서 벗어나 자신의 잠재의식과 환각적 경험을 예술의 언어로 전환한 쿠사마는 회화와 조각을 넘어 해프닝과 설치미술에 이르기까지 예술적 실험의 영역을 확장했다.
평생에 걸쳐 ‘무한’과 ‘반복’, ‘자아의 소멸’, ‘자유와 해방’이라는 주제를 탐구해 온 쿠사마 야요이는 자신의 정신적 경험을 독창적인 예술 언어로 승화시키며 현대미술의 중요한 작가로 자리매김했다. 특히 무한히 반복되는 그물과 점, 거울과 빛, 그리고 호박을 통해 구축한 독보적인 시각적 세계는 전 세계 미술계와 대중문화에 폭넓은 영향을 미쳤다. 쿠사마는 평생에 걸쳐 자신만의 예술적 세계를 확장하며 현대미술사에 강렬한 흔적을 남겼다.

Storage
A storage fee of KRW 30,000 per day will be charged for each lot that has not been collected 7 calendar days after purchase, regardless of whether the purchase price has been rendered in full.
For successful bids, a buyer’s premium (excluding VAT) and buyer’s expenses (if applicable) will be charged in addition to the hammer price.
All lots are sold “as is” and the bidder shall be responsible for viewing the lot in person beforehand. All bids are irrevocable and may not be retracted based on the condition of the artwork or frame.
Please bid carefully as a Buyer Withdrawal Fee of 30% of the hammer price must be paid in order to cancel a winning bid.
If a bid is placed within the last 30 seconds, the closing time for that lot will be extended by an additional 30 seconds.
Bidders bidding on the Lots considered to be traditional Koreas relices and treasures must fully understand the terms of Korea Culture Heritage Properties Protection Law, which prohibits exportation of such Lot.
